Cordless vacuum cleaners.... yay or nay

Vax, Dyson, G-Tech, Shark or other .... and why?

What with six cats (five of them semi long or long haired) keeping my floors clean is a bit of a losing battle; I swear I tend to have more garden debris in the house than I have in the garden at times Bar a rug in the lounge the entire flat is laminate flooring so easy to sweep, but sometimes that's just not enough so I was thinking a cordless vacuum may just be the thing for a quick whizz round. But do they have as good a suction to get into corners like a proper electric one. I have a Miele Cat & Dog and it's fantastic, but it's loud and cumbersome and not really ideal for everyday use.

So where best to get opinions than here

Trouble is what you really want is someone with similar circumstances.

G-tech is much raved about, and is bloody good, light, manoeverable and picks up on hard and soft flooring.
But, as with every vaccuum cleaner we've tried, it can't cope with Minnie's long, strong hairs.
They wind around the brushes but worse, around the ends of the rollers, next to the brushes.
If you're not careful the first warning is a smell of burning!

Bb has to go over our carpet first with a rubber brush - I might buy him a new one for Christmas
As said though, this is a problem whatever the cleaner.

My ex has two dogs, Alsation and Border Collie.

The downstairs is all laminate or lino, except for the lounge, and the dogs are not allowed in there. She has a G-Tech (not sure of the model) which automatically adjusts to the different floorings and has edge suction.

She binned the Dyson and now has a bog standard cylinder vac with powered head for the upstairs, which is all carpeted and another no-go area for the dogs.

What Di says about the hairs is true for any vac, but if a quick whizz is done fairly regularly the hairs should not build to be a problem, esp on laminate floors. The G-Tech hangs in what was the old pantry and the cylinder lives in the upstairs airing cupboard.

Di, I also sweep my rug as well first as it really does save the vacuum roller / brush. I have a cheap vileda cordless sweeper and what you describe about the hair around the roller happens to that one as well if I don't sweep up first; but it's not a vacuum and it's not powerful

Reason I was asking is that Amazon have a Vax on their Black Friday Sale at nearly half price which I thought was quite good (half to their regular and also half of the G-Tech). The reviews seem to be good

I think there's only one gtech, and it has been improved since I got ours so I don't know if it's solved the problem.
Daily hoovering doesn't help, Minnie's hairs are over 12" long normally.
We have a respite at the moment as she's just been clipped

Just read your comment Ria, our previous one was a vax pet and it was brilliant (same roller problem) but was too heavy and cumbersome for me.

Ex ditched the Dyson for the same reason, fortunately Kaiser (Alsatian) and Beth (wiry haired Collie) do not have long, long hairs.

Sorry, Ria, but I guess that is just one of those problems whatever you decide.

We've got a Dyson Animal cordless and I love it. It picks loads up and copes well with Billy's hairs. John uses it for hoovering out the car too.

Our plug in vacuum is a Dyson Animal too. I had a normal Dyson before Bill moved in but it wouldn't pick up his hairs so I bought an Animal and it deals with them with no problem, he's short haired though which helps.

thanks Jo - that's helpful. Can I ask which one you have the V6 or V8 (ie 20 vs 40 min run time)? The V6 is on special as well so.... and it's half the weight of the vax!

go mad and buy the two as they are half price lol a g tech is great for most jobs but animal fur does really need a bigger powerful vacuum xx
we have 2 Gtechs and 2 dysons to save carrying about one of each downstairs and the same upstairs

Mine's the DC58, I've had it a couple of years now and I think it was remarketed as the V6. It's got 20 minutes battery life anyway.
