How long ....

Postby TheOstrich » 03 Feb 2016, 17:19

.... do you keep your old receipts and paperwork for?

I guess over the years, with my background in accountancy as well, I've always tended to keep everything. But we've got filled box files stored all over the garage now, and we don't want to lug everything to the next house (when and wherever that might me). I'm gradually working through them and shredding everything before 1999 .....

Do any of you hoard everything like me? :D

I'm the wrong person to be replying because I keep nothing.

Bank statements I can always get copies of if needed
Ditto for pay slips
Receipts I'll keep if it's an expensive item and may need proof of purchase for warranty repair
Insurance documents only for the year they are valid

I used to keep loads of stuff but don't anymore

Retail receipts for 12/18 months. Bank statements going back several years. I have all my old pay slips, P60s, that kind of stuff, since I started at Osprey in '09.

 :D :D :D

Just about to shred MOT certificates from 1995, now; the vehicle concerned must have been long since recycled into tin cans!

The shredder is running red hot!! (When it's not jammed ... )

Receipts for costly items get kept till the guarantee period runs out, most of everything else gets shredded.

Minimum of 5 years here - especially the car tax receipts - the guy in Finances told us that a couple of years ago.

In fact, I've kept everything since we moved here - the Portuguese take a while to get to you, but you need to have all the paperwork, when they do.

Another big fine otherwise

I always thought it was seven years, for major items, but weekly grocery receipts
only a few weeks.

They did say seven years Aggers, I was advised by the Hypnotherapy Society to keep case notes for seven years for my hypnotherapy clients, just in case of any complaint or come back. They were on the PC though, not hand written.
