If your steering locked when on a motorway, like Grant`s daughter. It is conceivable that the lock could engage in certain circumstances which may have happened to her. I can cope with brake failure and accelerator sticking but at a bit of a loss over steering apart from hazards, horn and headlights but what else? Probably too dangerous to stop and get hit from behind.

I think that it would have to be hazards, headlights, horn, hand signals and a gentle slowing down to try to create a safe stop.

Given that it normally locks so that the wheel is going to turn the car in a circle, I'd be with WM but I'm pretty sure the handbrake would be part of it.

What would you do if your caravan went past you at 70mph, when you were doing 40mph and it was still attached to the car....

I think I would wish I had an ejector seat in that situation, Suff I would however never tow a caravan on a motorway..ever. I have in the past though towed a boat including one memorable occasion when the trailer had a puncture.....on the peripherique.

All those bikes and scooters whistling past you and the boat out of control. Plus the French habit of thinking

I must admit that it was somewhat "interesting" as our 2 Tonne car span around. What was more interesting was the same wind picking up the caravan (now on it's side) and putting it back on it's wheels again....

Such is life.

Wow that really did happen to you then, and you survived Just remembered another boat incident on a single carriageway near Cahors just wide enough for 2 and a half cars, I was trundling at about 50 with a stream the other way with no gaps when a DS passing the queue came roaring at me on my side. I had to brake and at the last moment it went into the ditch on my right. The chap behind managed to brake and not hit me but behind him they were not so clever and there was a multiple pile up. Gendarmes tried to blame me but realised there was nothing else I could have done so I went on my way.

What a nightmare scenario.

I think my reaction would be to put on the hazard lights and slow down as slowly as possible, depending on
the traffic situation. Then evacuate the car pronto.

It was a touch more exciting that I would have liked for a while there. Mrs S was freaking out. It's not like you expect your 2 Tonne 7 seater to become a spinning missile with no control.

However, the same wind that took the van over was good enough to put it back on it's wheels again so we didn't have to phone the AA to get the van lifted and the A1 was cleared very quickly

I've worked in vehicle recovery. The priority is to clear the road, not to worry about the state of the Van.
