Change of taste buds as you get older

Postby meriad » 05 Feb 2025, 10:25

What food have you only started eating (and enjoying doing so) as you've gotten older / and equally what foods have you always liked that many people cannot stand...

I never could stand the taste of marmalade, to me it was always just so bitter and absolutely horrid. But about 4 years ago I was gifted an amazing Fortnum & Masons hamper that had a jar of fine cut marmalade. Not sure why I thought to give it a try, but I did and ever since then it's been a staple in my cupboard. It's what I had for breakfast - hence this post
Olives I only really started enjoying when I was in my 30's.... I'd pick at one or two before then, but only when I moved to the UK and they often were put on tables as little nibbles did I develop a proper liking for them

Foods I've always liked - anything in the cabbage family, esp brussels sprouts; yum!

I think it's probably inbuilt to go for sweet foods more as youngsters. Perhaps in cave-dweller days sweet berries off the bushes were safer, less likely to be poisonous :? I still like some sweet stuff, but am definitely more into savoury or sour than I used to be.

I love the lemon and like marmalade Ria, have you tried it?

I gip just thinking about runny cheeses. Mild Cheddar, Mozzarella, Gouda, Edam and Leerdammer are about my limit.

I never got into sweet things as I am more of a savoury person. Sour and bitter or hot and spicy flavours are my favourites

Oh, and I cannot stand French type wines or vinegar (they are the same thing, aren't they?) I much prefer a good Whisky.

I don't think things have changed much for me.

Back in my teens and started to drink alcohol it had to be very sweet, Babycham and so on. Couldn't drink spirits at all. Soon grew out of that, wine has to be very dry and I'll happily have a small vodka, bacardi or Caribbean rum

Ria, I couldn’t stand olives until we started holidaying in Tunisia in my 50s. Now I love them, but just plain ones, not the stuffed ones. My very sweet tooth has certainly lessened as I have got older.

I think if I was to present a list it woould go on a bit.

But new likes since my 30's onwards would be olives, avacado, melons and many different curries.

Always loved, parsnips, neeps (you call it swede we call it turnip), many kinds of blue cheese.
