that have children/ grandchildren heard of this,
We were having dinner with our son ,d -in l and Grandson (11) mum asked him do you have fire drill at school, yes he replied---

1 bell is a test
2 bells is a fire drill
3 bells is a fire and to evacuate

All pretty much standard until he went on to say
6 bells mean school on lockdown ,intruder alert and to hide under your desk

Pretty standard as round here, Vic, except for no bells; it is now similar to the emergency services' sirens.

One long screech, repeated = a test.

Two shorter screeches, repeated = a drill and everyone must evacuate.

A continuous rising and falling trilling sound = a real fire and evacuate as per a drill.

All classrooms now have lockable fire doors. These are useful for lockdowns with detailed instructions given over the Tannoy system or sent to staff laptops via Wi-Fi.

Are lockdown drills really needed? I understand why they have them in the US where school shootings are, sadly, fairly common, but here? Doesn't it just scare the children unnecessarily? :?

I can remember when I was at the primary school in the war, we had pracice drill in case of an air raid.
We used to go into the cellar where the coke for the boiler was kept. We had to wear our gas masks. A break frpm the lessons.
It was an old school and this was considered the best place.
Fortunately we were not in an area which would be bombed.
