For the two of us, who like proper chips, I use less than a teaspoon of chip oil.

I was reading this artcle about air fryers in BBC Good Food and basically they are a very tiny small oven in a bucket. They are no more and no less healthy than a normal oven, just cheaper to run... then came this, about the different types.
'Mini oven’ types: these models use convection or fan technology to cook food on flat, slide-in trays. As well as roasting, their extra air frying functions circulate hot air around the food for more efficient crisping. These took up the space of an average-sized microwave. Some may also include rotisserie elements.

So, I actually do own an "air fryer" but it is known as a mini oven. It can also do toast, bacon, burgers or chops under the grill, and rotisserie chicken and joints. As a bonus it also does "fake" proper chips.

Note: Proper chips are deep fried in beef dripping. Always - nothing else. ;)

Pt 2.

From a technical, not a sales pitch or advertising, point of view, it is a small and hot space in which to cook. The idea is centuries old - the Dutch oven. Cook a roast on a trivet with veg underneath in a cast iron closed pot on a small fire rather than on a spit with many pans over a large open fire.

There might be some bells and whistles to help sell it, and you might not need pans to cook in as they are usually integral, but it is still an oven. 'Small oven' does not cut it for a new product, but 'air fryer' is much more sexy and open to the creation of myths - there are many.

There's nothing new under the sun.

For "proper" proper chips peel some big spuds and make chunky chips. Coat and turn them in a good sprinkle of salt and leave in a colander to draw out the water - an hour or so. Rinse and leave to dry. Deep fry in beef dripping on a medium to hot heat. Serve with mushy peas and battered haddock. Not cod, never cod.
