My first hedgehog sighting

Postby meriad » 17 Mar 2015, 10:42

I'm too excited... I've been putting food outside for a few weeks now just in case and last night I heard the metal bowl outside clanking away. I thought it was one of the cats so had a look out the window but there it was - my first hedgie of the year. Last year I had three that, because of their respective sizes, I nicknamed Maxi, Midi and Mini.... and it was Midi that appeared last night. As far as I know Mini (and two more mini ones) were nabbed by my neighbour in December and taken to a rescue because they were autumn babies and way to small to have survived hibernation; she's expecting to get them back end of this month so hopefully I'll get to see loads more. Maxi is too big to fit under the gap in the fence but I think he's been munching at the food I've had out in the front garden where it's not fenced it

But in the meantime though; I'm very happy that Midi survived hibernation; I do love having them about.

Awwww lovely!!!! Hedgehogs used to come into my mum's garden, and pinch the catfood from the bowls by the back door, so she started putting it out specially :D

How lovely.

I haven't seen a hedgehog for years.

It must be fairly warm down your way, Ria, we have not really had the temperatures for them to come out yet. We have had some clear days but not many above 8C and at night it is still only about 2 - 3C.

Don't forget to put some water out for them, they like a good drink do hedgehogs.

oooh and even more exciting - said neighbour who nabbed the underweight ones in December has just asked if I could maybe have a run in my back garden for the little ones when they come back so we can do a slow(er) release... I've got more space and a more secure garden than she does

oh yay!!!
