Isn't it odd how one can remember the names of schoolmates, yet, if you're like me,
have difficulty in remembering names of new acquaintances now ? Hard disc full, I reckon.

We have all become a bit inconsistent with school closures. If the school does it on (often spurious) safety grounds we get up in arms. But when it suits us to keep our little darlings at home we can't wait to let all and sundry know what good parents we are.

We lived seven miles from our secondary school and only a nuclear war would have forced mum to let us stay home.

I had to walk over a mile to school, and many times I had to trudge through snow (once 15'' deep) on my own. Not once was the school closed.

Absolutely! I remember it well. And when you got there, the morning break-time 1/3rd of a pint bottles of free milk couldn't be doled out because they'd all frozen, and the silver caps had been forced off and upwards on one inch blocks of expanded ice!! :D

You're quite right, though, Aggers, the deciding factor is transport these days - cars and buses.

I wonder if teachers lived closer to schools back then? I know the teachers in the local primary travel quite a way to get to work from home.

Secondary school has pupils and staff from all over so I assume they take travel into account.

I don't remember our school ever being completely closed but I do remember being sent home as the snow got worse on a number of occasions.
