Board symbols

I don't know whether this question has ever been asked.

It concerns the symbols on the left-hand side of each item on a board index.
Some are red, some blue, some flashing, some with a red asterisk, etc.
What do they signify? I can't see a reason.

If it's red then you haven't looked at it yet - it's new. If it's flashing then it's a popular thread with a lot of posts.

There is also a sign for when a post has been locked, but you don't see that very often. Some forums put a dot in the icon if you have already posted in it yourself.
