Dusty at the BBC.

Boy, did I take some stick as a '60s Mod for liking her.

She had a mild jazz and blues vibe with a chocolaty mezzo-soprano voice, and Dad loved that. He had a huge collection of black jazz and blues from the Duke, the Count, Ella, Etta, Nat. Ray, Charlie, Janice, Billie H, Aretha.... and Dusty.

After tea he would sit in the front room reading the paper, having a smoke, and playing his records on the radiogram. I would be there, because that's where the Enc Brit lived, laid on the floor doing homework, and the music stuck.

Dusty did not have a great vocal range, and that was her strength: ironically. Just about anybody and everybody could sing along to all her records. She also did loads of Motown covers for mums and dads.
