I come from a tailoring family, so I was expected to know these things.

I remember my sis having a velvet jacket with a similar idea. The buttons were sewn on the right side, but behind them on the other side of the cloth were hooks, the eyelets into which the hooks locked were sewn on the left side. I know what I mean.
