Android Tablet questions.

Postby Aggers » 11 Jul 2014, 18:13

Mrs A is persevering with her Android tablet and has found it quite useful.

I have been able to answer a few of her queries along the way, but her two latest have stumped me.
Perhaps someone here will be able to help.

When she is visiting certain websites, and is going through their various sections, she sometime gets the following message,
and is thereby prevented from proceeding further: Tab limit reached. Can't open a new tab until you close one.
What should she do now? I've never experienced this on my laptop.

How do you wipe out all the proliferation of websites visited, as shown on the 'Google History' function?

There's a little icon I think, a square with lines across, at the bottom, when you tap on that it shows everything you have open, and you can go down the list and close all the ones you don't need at the moment.
The actual icon varies with makes/models so maybe try googling 'how to close tabs' - followed by that particular make/model.

She may be opening each page of a website she visits in a new tab by mistake - for instance if you go to Marks and Spencer home page, then go to ladies' dresses, then ladies' tops, that could be 3 separate tabs.

If you go to the top of the current page, there is an icon that looks like two pages, one behind the other, with a number in the middle.

Press that icon and it will bring up the tab slider. Each tab has a red minus sign on it for closing.

Shortcut to the tabs is to keep pinching to shrink. You will eventually pinch to the tabs.

should do it.

Useful to check them daily.

Thanks, friends.

We have now (I think) managed to clear some of the tabs.:

Why the hell do they have to make these things so damned complicated?

I have never had this problem with my desktop or laptop computers, so why has it become necessary now?

No wonder the world is going from bad to worse when folk are confronted with so much stupid technology?

Two things really.

Lack of screen space which requires them to hide stuff whilst you are working

The fallacy promoted by Apple that you can do everything with one button and a whole heap of actions. Which is why Apple Laptops, to this day, have one mouse button (unless you get the programmable touchpads), and Windows Laptops have two or more. Apple got there first with the more advanced smartphone so everyone else is following them.

Simply put, one additional button can equal

Pinch, swipe, swipe, swipe, swipe, scroll, scroll, scroll, press.

Until we get rid of the whole "one button plus actions" mindset, we're going to have to live with what they choose to give us. Phones used to have multiple buttons and sensible/programmable actions. We will get back there in the end and tablets will follow suit. May take a while though. Or we'll go somewhere entirely different like google glass with a virtual keyboard. (all known capabilities for years).
