Washing trainers

After my disastrous attempt at washing a pillow I am getting advice before I wash L's trainers.
She has come back from her residential stay with school with at least four loads of extremely filthy washing (she only went for two nights ).
I have never washed trainers before - always managed to get away with wiping them - but these two pairs definitely need more than a quick once over with a damp cloth.
What is the best way to wash them please - should I put them inside something (a pillow case) or should I just chuck them in the drum. What setting should they be on and how long should I wash them for?
