Poor Mia cat

I wasn't going to say anything because it is nothing compared to Millie, but you are so good with the vibes.

Poor old Mia has a poorly leg. She is limping and I feel really guilty as I really struggled to get her tablets down her last night and at one point I did grab her leg to stop her running away. I had forgotten that until I thought about it. So tonight I wrapped her in a blanket and got them down that way.

She has been to the vets and Simon is pretty sure it is nothing serious, and definitely not broken, phew!!!! He bent it this way and that way, back on itself, pulled forward and made her get all her claws out. He said the pain is definitely around the elbow, but it isn't major pain. The elbow felt a little swollen but not much different to the other one, so he thinks she may have a bit of arthritis and something (probably me pulling it) has irritated it.

She had some Metacam this morning, but she can't really have much of that because of her kidneys, so please keep your fingers crossed it gets better and quickly, as I hate see her limping around. Plus I do feel horrible and guilty. Simon did say cats limp quite easily on their front legs, so limping isn't necessarily a sign of pain, just stiffness or discomfort. Apparently back leg limping is far more significant. Cats can manage quite well with three legs especially is one of them is a front one. Not sure if he was hoping to make me feel better or worse telling me that

Poor Mia.

Are you able to get the tablets in a liquid form or even grind them up and mix them with a little water and then use a syringe to get them down her? We find the medicines much easier to get down Millie than the tablets.

Sending massive vibes for a very speedy recovery.

Oh poor Mia... but as Jo says; don't beat yourself up about grabbing her; I've had to do that more than once in the past as well and whilst I always do feel guilty afterwards there always has been a good reason which generally involves the cats own safety or health; and yes catching an escapee to pill goes under the health bit :D I forget, what pills does Mia get at the moment? Have you tried hiding them in a piece of a webbox stick?

Also Shell, my Molly has kidney issues (it seems she's been on Fortekor forever for her kidney problems). She also developed arthritis in her lower spine and hips and I had her on Metacam for that until not so long ago - to start with it was every other day or when I thought she was in pain, but the last year it was more or less daily as she really struggled. All in all I had Molly on Metacam for probably close on three years and the only reason we stopped is because Molly hardly eats and it was affecting her tummy really badly; so if anything, the thing to make sure of is that you don't give it to Mia on an empty tummy. Obviously check with Simon first, but personally if it were me I'd give Mia a daily dose of the stuff for about a week until you notice the pain is less; then drop down to every second or third day for another week and then stop it if you can - the metacam won't damage the kidneys that quickly...

Another thing to maybe help Mia, esp this time of year when it's cold and the chill hurts the bones , is a heated pad / bed. I started with a snuggle safe for Molly http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0014LJKUA/? ... 0014LJKUA; simply pop it into the microwave for 5 mins and it stays warm for about 8 hours. I used to put it under a sheepskin that she used to sleep on. I then upgraded Molly to a proper electric heated bed (yes I know my cats are totally spoilt), but it really is fab and keeps her nice and toasty. And at 20 years old I think she's entitled to some comforts :)

fusses to your two

A heated pad??? Ria they were so hot last night they got up and slept on top of their igloo totally squashing it. They sleep on blankets in an igloo with more blankets next to the radiator.

Mia is also on Fortekor, but Metacam does say do not give to cats with renal failure. I am sure in cases like Molly's you have to weight it up, but Simon is so pleased with Mia's progress he doesn't feel the leg warrants the risk. To be honest he was right, as this evening she is using her scratching pad, holding on with both front feet and hanging off it and only walking with a slightly stiff leg. Plus Metacam can cause tummy upsets and it is vital Mia eats.

Thank you for your vibes, they worked as ever and I shall stick to wrapping her in a blanket as syringing it takes longer and she is such a wriggle, speed is of the essence
