Kidney diet

Mia's latest results are back and they are good on the whole. Her creatinine is down, which is very good news, but her urea and phosphates are still creeping up. Simon says they can be controlled by diet so he wants her to try a kidney diet. He is going to leave me some samples out (by samples do you think that means free?) I will pick them up on Saturday as they are closed Friday. I had a look on Cat Chat forum and several people recommended Happy Cat, so I ordered a bag of that on Zoopla, plus some sample sized tins of Beaphar k/d. She really doesn't like pate type food, and neither does she like dried food at all anymore, but we can but try

Good luck with it Shell.... some cats are quite happy to eat a kidney diet and others just won't touch the stuff. If Mia decides to not eat any of the specialist foods check with Simon if you could use Ipakitine
http://www.medicanimal.com/product/~pro ... tAodfCQApA which is a phosphate binder and may help as well. There is another paste called Renalzine but I've yet to hear of anyone's cat actually eating food with it on. The Ipakitine is a powder that you sprinkle into their food so easier to hide.
A friend of mine; one of her cats has hyper thyroidism as well as the beginnings of kidney issues and she's researched every and all foods. I'm happy to put you in touch with her if we find Mia won't touch the kidney foods, because what Sarah feeds Pip is 'normal' foods you can get from most supermarkets but low in whatever needs to be low. But fingers crossed Mia will be a good girl and eat the special diet.

Thanks for that Ria. I read on Cat Chat that some of the cats with kidney disease will eat Happy Cat, so I have ordered a bag. Plus Beaphar are doing an offer on Zoopla at the moment of sample pack of kidney diet wet food.

you've got insurance for Mia, haven't you? Can you find out from them if her special food would be covered by them as well?
